Faux Fur Coat
When I was a child my grandmother bought me a real fur coat. I loved the feel of the soft pelt but
I didn’t really understand what it was made of until my parents accidentally mentioned that it was rabbit fur. It
was devastating to know that I was wearing little bunnies and I wouldn’t wear the coat ever again. From that moment
on, I was a faux fur coat kind of girl.
There was an element of disgust in knowing that the coat I wore came from an animal. Maybe things
would have been different if I was older but I still prefer a faux fur coat over the real thing any day. First of
all the smell that accompanies a coat made out of real pelts is disturbing. I can’t remember if I bothered me right
away or if it bothered me after I found out that the coat was made out of the real thing.
The smell became especially bothersome after the item got wet. This is inevitability when you give
a coat to a child who is ten years of age. Children like to be outside in all kinds of weather and even a faux fur
coat couldn’t stand up to my preference for the out doors. Within a few days of winter play, the coat was a stinky
mess.
I found this to be ironic even as a child because animals live outdoors all the time and their
pelts do not get ruined. They may not smell perfectly appealing, but they don’t exactly fall apart. My coat did. It
literally came apart at the seams. We were left with pieces of bunny fur lying around the house. This traumatic
event steered me away from ever buying a faux fur coat as well.
I basically stuck to wearing artificial fabrics for my outerwear. This was not always the best
look. Some winter coats can make you look like the Michelin Man if you are not careful with your selection. I know
because I was known as the Michelin Girl in during my freshman year in high school.
Today, real fur is sneaking its way back into the fashion scene. Proponents for the fuzzy pelts include famous
people like Jennifer Lopez. However, there is a backlash from organizations like PETA who vehemently abhor such
practices. Choosing a faux fur coat is a reasonable alternative. A faux fur coat can give you the look and feel of
the real thing without putting any innocent bunnies to rest.
